The McKinney Family Association & Library was founded September, 1981 as a non-profit, educational association and library, dedicated to researching, preserving and collecting historical and family history and data, not necessarily all of lineal or legal families, but all those interested in the McKinney surname and variants and to assist and instruct in genealogical research and to publish private and public records and educational articles. Bylaws and Constitution adopted October 1981 and granted non profit, incorporation 3 May 1983 by the State of Oklahoma. Trustees are Barbara Pannage Stanfield, E. Neil Stanfield and Richard A. From The Editor's Notes:

You will note a new look for our periodical with this issue; hopefully, it will be regarded as an improvement in clarity and legibility. You will also find a second ten generation chart for your use with this issue, please use it and return it for our computer project. Mail to Mrs. Barbara Stanfield so that your family information will be included in our first computer listing of family groups. We hope to have the first installment ready for our summer issue.

We are also happy to inform you that the association has a new librarian, Mrs. Karen McKinney. Please send your book requests to Karen, she has volunteered to relieve your present librarian and will be happy to help you with book loans and related requests. Book listings were given in our last issue, as well as the main listings in the fall 1985 issue. Remember to reimburse the association for postal charges as well as the jiffy mailer.

Also, your renewal notice is now printed on our mailing label, thanks for that to our Treasurer, Peter McKinney. Please check your address label for the expiration date. We are continuing the Tennessee material with this issue as well as a continuation of the Josiah McKinney line. We will not print ahnentafels with this issue due to the length of some of them. Concerning their printing, if there are errors or omissions, please let the Editor know. It is not always easy to fit some of them in their entirety, and Adamic ahnentafels are for the most part, too lengthy to include in one issue. Basically, we are most interested in the McKinney sections of these ancestor charts.

Note: The contributor asks if Obediah McKinney on land list of 1 Apr 1815 p 1200 could be the son of James McKinney of Surry Co., NC? The Editor believes that the preponderance of evidence shows that Obediah is the son of James of Surry Co., as the earliest records of his land in OH is 1816 – and although family legend places him in Ross Co. in 1810, there is little to prove this fact.

 Return to top of page

It is also evident, that since Obediah is placed in Lee Co. in this time period, that the Abriam McKinney is, indeed, Byrom McKinney also a son of James McKinney of Surry Co. The identity of David McKinney is unknown at this writing, however.

Evidence suggests that if Obediah traveled to OH with his brother in 1810, he could possibly have held land in Lee Co. with his brother Byrom being there. Several families from Surry Co., including the Spargurs, did go to OH between 1806 and 1810, but several of them returned due to the Indian troubles, and left for OH again between 1815 and 1820. Obediah is not listed as a taxpayer in OH until 1827, whereas his brother William is shown on tax lists much earlier. Also in Lee Co., VA, was another brother, Shadrack McKinney. Obediah McKinney married Sarah Louise Smith, born in VA in 1794, they were married in 1816 in Ross Co., OH on Paint Creek. Obediah's first marriage (1810) is not recorded, but it is believed that his first wife was Malatha Spargur, the marriage is recorded in the history of Highland Co., OH, but the bride's name is missing. Obediah transferred to Fairfield Monthly Meeting, Nov 11, 1809.

According to Hinshaw's Quaker records, Shadrack was dismissed from Westfield in 1804; William to Fairfield (Green Co., OH) in 1809; Obadiah to Fairfield in 1809; Byrom dismissed in 1795; John dismissed in 1803; Jesse dismissed in 1817.

Obadiah McKinney was rocf at Fairfield MM, 7th month, 28th day, 1810 at the same time as brother William – both were dismissed for disunity 12th day, 12th month, 1810.

Alfred McKinney son of Obadiah and Sarah (Smith) was listed as born 10th day, 10th month, 1825 at Hopewell monthly meeting. In 1811, Obadiah McKinney is listed as Ôturned out for training', in the War of 1812 which may be the reason for his dismissal from monthly meeting in Highland Co.

The preponderance of evidence would indicate that the McKinneys had long-time ties in Virginia – father James was married in Virginia both to Mary Byrom Ballard and Lucy Hurst; Shadrack, Obediah, John and Abriam (Byrom) all held land or lived in the Scott-Lee county areas in the early 1800's; no other Obediah McKinney has been identified in any records other than the son of James and Mary Ballard McKinney . . .

The Daily Breeze newspaper, Sunday, Mar 16, 1986 printed an article by Hugh A. Mulligan for the Associated Press concerning the emigration of the Irish to America, and conditions as they found them in New York. He particularly mentions Our Lady of the Rosary Church and the haven that was founded for Irish females both temporarily and permanently as far as locating positions for the newly located Irish women. ÔIn his study overlooking the harbor, Wilders keeps the faded ledgers listing the date and ship they arrived on, where they came from and which relatives awaited them: S. S. Astoria, Jul 5, 1905, Jennie McKinney age 16, from Derry – to Sarah McKinney, sister, 529 West 20th Street'. Unusual, that the one entry he chose to include in his article concerned a McKinney.
