If broadened in scope of coverage – other surnames as well as McKinney families, we would qualify for tax exemption.

We have not yet received research reports from Dr. John Anderson and Roxanne Carkuff for this issue. When received they shall be sent as a separate mailing and we thank you for your patience.

Omitted for internet publication is the Financial Statement

Letters to the Editor

return to top of page

Excerpt regarding the possibility of Mordecai's ancestors spending some time in Massachusetts, the material on the Scottish prisoners transported to New England in 1651 and 1652 contained in various ship passenger lists was examined. The phonetic spelling makes for a lot of speculation, but of the approximately 257 prisoners on the 'John and Sara', only one name could be tortured into a phonetic spelling of McKinney . . Alester Mackhene . . and in order to arrive at this result, one would have to give the final 'e' a strong sound which does not appear to have been the case with the other names. More likely McKean or McIan, although this could be argued against because of the presence of numerous "Mackajnes" on the list.

Editor: Indicates the importance of the study of surnames.

In view of the fact that some authorities have listed McKinney as a Galloway name, it is of interest that an article on the Journals of Andrew Johnston, (SCHQ) 1912, commencing at page 190, contains a lot of information on the Peapack Patent, Bedminster Twp., which seems to have a heavy concentration of settlers of Scots descent. In a discussion of the origin of the name Pluckemin, the Rev. S. R. Crockett, a writer who was intimately familiar with southwestern Scotland, stated that Pluckamin was a village near Laurieston in Galloway and was situated in an area owned by the Griersons who migrated to the US in 1708 . . . .

American Prisoners of the Revolution, Dandridge

P 22 – 23: Muster Roll of Capt. Abraham Shepher's company of Riflemen raised Jul 1776: James McKinney, private of the PA Flying Camp, perished in prison 1776. The appendix also lists James McKinney (2).

The Association is in dire need of a research committee, whose duties would include selecting, corresponding and paying for professional researchers in the various areas . . it has become too large for the editor and coordinator to handle alone. The Committee would have access to the funds of the association earmarked for this purpose, and would have the responsibility of gaining reports for publication in the quarterly. Please, let Barbara Stanfield or Patricia Kirkwood know, if you are interested in this phase of our function. We have two researchers working in New Jersey at the present time, but need to define limits and future goals of research in other areas. Also, mention has been made of 'our' library . . at this point, the Association has three volumes, the rest are from the personal library of the Editor. Please donate your unwanted books, or even consider new purchases for adding to the association's book list, they are appreciated and used. To date, the library has mailed more than 15 pieces of books and/or reports and pamphlets to borrowing members.

News and Notes

We have again received several communications from Mr. R. P. Dutschmann of Terra Bella, CA who is continuing the search for descendants of Andrew McKinney and Sarah A. Mabee McKinney of KY, IN and CA. The ultimate purpose of Mr. Dutschmann's search is to be able to place a marker on the grave of their son, James McKinney. James had brothers, Madison L., Edwin, and J. C. McKinney. Without permission of the descendants of James, no action can be taken to properly mark James' grave. Can anyone help locate desc of these McKinneys?

We have received several copies of McKinney Kith and Kin, published in 1962 and 1963 from Pauline McKinney of Farmington, NM. They are available on loan from our library, and consist mainly of census records and some queries. The Editor was Milton A. Parsons in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, who died in 1966. Does any member have knowledge of Mr. Parsons work and where or if, it was donated to a genealogical society or library? He has spent more than twenty five years in researching McKinney records. Mr. Parsons was instrumental in organizing a local chapter of the Idaho Genealogical Society. Pauline has also sent material from Bristol Parrish Records of Prince George Co., VA, 1720-1792: Morgan, son of Morgan and Sibilla Mackenney, born 7th Jun last bap 7th Oct 1722.

John, son of Morgan and Sibbilla Mackenney, born 12th Feb last bap 10 Apr 1724.

James, son of Morgan and Sybella MacKinney born 7 Feb 1725 (no bap date)

Gladys V. Alexander, TX – Desc from Samuel McKinney/Ailie Wilkerson of TX

Books Received:

Limestone County, Alabama 1860, Compiled and Corrected by Jerry Todd (Pensacola) 250pp + ii; 1983; $1750 + 1.50 Post from Mr. Johnny Todd. Contents include a guide to interpreting the census, Division Number 2 (Athens), Division Number 1 (Shoals Ford), index and addendum. Additional pages are provided for notes. Clear, factual and well-typed and presented, this surely represents a labor of love . . I can't imagine transcribing any census for publication! A typical census entry:

            P22 Page Number 17, Jun 12, 1860

116. Rochelle – cont.

McKinney, Caroline                        21        AL

            Daniel Z                     14        AL

            Rebecca F.                 10        AL

            Thomas P.                 0          AL                   etc.

Value of real and personal estate is not included, nor whether or not he was married within the year. An excellent census transcription, this is highly recommended for AL researchers. This will be placed in the McKinney Family Library for those who wish to borrow the copy; however, I would suggest adding it to your library shelf.

The Family McKinney, Nancy Sayford; 152pp, revised, (Feb 1983), soft-cover, spiral bound. Beautifully done family history, much as before but with additions and corrections – and best of all, the index in this revision is included with the text (not separate). Bibliography, maps, lineage charts, and a fascinating study of Scottish customs and history. Available from the author (see roster of Members), this shall be added to our growing library.

Received . . Newspaper clippings from January 7, 1982, Rogersville Review, Rogersville, TN. Entitled "Christmas at Hale Springs" , it describes John A. McKinney (Augustine), a native of Ireland and an accomplished lawyer. A descriptor of the house built in 1855 for him is included. The letter and article are written by Charles W. Lawson. The great, great granddaughter of John McKinney is Mrs. Almond Gray who is living at the hotel at the present time. Most interesting. Available for loan from the library.

Please remember that your 'unwanted and unloved' books can be advertised in our publication, or accepted as donations. We hope to have our non-profit standing soon and donations will be tax-deductible. At the present time, association membership has been extended as a payment for donations. When borrowing materials we ask only that you reimburse us for the mailing envelope and post-insurance.
